Engines and performance for the Porsche Cayman

When the Porsche line-up was revamped in 2016, along with the name change, the models dispensed with the flat-six engines for turbocharged four-cylinder units. There are just two engines: it's either a 2.0 litre for the entry level models or the 718 Cayman S has a bigger 2.5 litre petrol engine for better levels of performance. The best performer is the Cayman T which will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 5.1 seconds using the six-speed manual box and with the twin-clutch automatic transmission, the sprint time is 4.7 seconds. Fuel economy for the Cayman will range from 26 mpg to 34 mpg.

Equipment and handling

The Porsche 718 Cayman is not only a great to drive coupe with sharp handling, it's also a surprisingly practical car to own. The build quality is excellent and it's a very impressive creation. In 2018, the Porsche 718 Cayman T was unveiled, which offers the 2.0 litre engine to produce 300 HP with a slightly different chassis to deliver improved handling. It has a top speed of 177 mph. There's no doubt that the 718 Cayman is an excellent car to drive with responsive engines, a well-designed and well-built cabin - it resembles an upmarket executive saloon rather than a sports car - and there's a surprising 405 litres of boot space. Around town, the Cayman is easy to manoeuvre though if you are caught up in slow-moving city traffic then the automatic transmission is a pricey option worth considering. Otherwise, the car deals with bumps surprisingly well and there's the option for adjustable dampers to help smooth out the roads even further. Among the standard kit, Porsche has added satnav to the 718 Cayman along with a 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity. Drivers also get to enjoy air conditioning, ABS and several airbags. There's also traction control to help deliver the grip when the Cayman is put through its paces. Essentially, while this is the cheapest model in the Porsche line-up, the 718 Cayman delivers a spirited performance and is great fun to drive, whether that's around town or on long motorway journeys. And while the Cayman S is a sound choice there's no avoiding the fact that the entry level 718 Cayman is one of the best two-seater cars currently available.
