The Porsche Boxster is a great roadster with excellent handling and its low running costs and strong engines make it a great choice. For the money, the car offers the best handling around.
There are three engines to choose from for the Porsche Boxster: a 2.7litre, a 3.4litre for the Boxster S and GTS while the Boxster Spyder gets a 3.8 litre unit. The engines return fuel economy of between 28 mpg and 34 mpg with emissions ranging from 206g/km to 211g/km.
The entry-level engine reaches 0 to 62 mph in just 5.7 seconds - in the Boxster S does that time in just five seconds. The engine has a nice growl and is always responsive though it works best at higher speeds.
The best performer is the Spyder with its 3.8 litre engine producing 370bhp with emissions of 230g/km; the car has a top speed of 180 mph and will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds
The Porsche Boxster is the car that effectively reinvented the roadster with an offering that was one of the best handling and all-round great cars available today. The Boxster has a sharp and enjoyable drive made even more so by its powerful engines in an impressive package. Surprisingly, the Boxster is fairly cheap to run.
The Boxster was relaunched in 2012 and with it came a well laid out and more polished product; the interior has more than a passing resemblance to the Porsche 911 and it's a very comfortable drive too. Being a roadster means that the suspension has a fairly stiff set-up to help improve its sports car performance.
However, Porsche has added the option of its active suspension management system which allows the driver to change the suspension settings at the push of a button. Switch it to comfortable and the suspension becomes noticeably softer and will deal with those bumps and potholes easily.
The range of standard equipment includes alloy wheels, stop/start, touchscreen control, MP3 connectivity and a remote control hood operation. Road noise is also impressively low despite the fact it has a fabric roof, though the roof itself will fold down in nine seconds. There's also a decent amount of luggage space on board - unusual for a sports car.
Essentially, the Porsche Boxster sets the benchmark for other roadsters to reach and it does so with aplomb. While the car is the entry point to the prestigious marque, it is also, arguably, the best value in the line-up.
