Overview of the Nissan Micra

Engines and performance for the Nissan Micra

The Micra has a 1.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine under the bonnet, producing either 71 PS, 90 PS or 100PS which are mated to a five-speed manual transmission. There's also a 1.0 litre unit producing 117 PS which is coupled to a smooth shifting six-speed manual box. There's also an option of the firm's CVT automatic transmission for the Tekna, Acenta and N-Sport models. There's a very good and frugal diesel engine option producing 90 PS with economy of 62 mpg. The petrol engines return between 46 and 52 mpg.

Equipment and handling

The latest Nissan Micra is a big step forward from the car it replaces and there's a lot to like about it. It has quirky styling, an impressive cabin and lots of equipment to attract owners. There's a lot to recommend it and it's a nippy and agile car to drive around town and it is enjoyable for long motorway journeys too. The suspension and chassis deal effectively with winding country roads and it's a practical offering with a sizeable boot. The interior is a pleasant place to spend time with lots of soft touch materials and safety kit includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition. There are options to add equipment such as obstacle detection and blind spot warning if drivers need more. This is the fifth generation of the Nissan Micra and the interior features ambient lighting and is a practical and safe environment. The infotainment system is easy to use and while the sound system is impressive, owners can upgrade to a unique personal audio system that includes speakers in the driver's headrest. The new Micra is not just wider and longer than the car it replaces, it's also lower to deliver better driving dynamics and the carmaker has high hopes that it will re-establish itself as one of the bestselling cars in the UK. It's up against stiff competition but it has a very attractive package for drivers with lots of technology and comfort to make it an interesting choice. Essentially, the Nissan Micra is a supermini that impresses and there's a lot to offer in a competitive segment that drivers will enjoy but mainly because it's an agile and nice car to drive and easy to live with.
