Great roadster offers thrills

Engines and performance for the Mercedes SLC

Of the engine choices, there is a 2.0 litre petrol offering producing 181 hp while there is a more effective V6 3.0 litre engine delivering 362 hp. There's also a diesel choice for the SLC 250d with the 2.0 litre engine returning 65 mpg. The power is delivered effectively using the Mercedes' nine-speed automatic transmission which is smooth in its operation. To help broaden its appeal, Mercedes introduced a turbocharged 1.6 litre petrol unit delivering 156 hp for the entry-level model. This version is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, which for some will deliver a genuine roadster experience.

Equipment and handling

The Mercedes SLC not only has a smart-looking interior and attractive exterior looks, it's also a well-built roadster that is great fun to drive. The SLC has a cabin that is clearly focused on delivering lots of comfort and with the roof down, the car delivers sports car thrills. The design is a recognisable one with the sloping bonnet and there's an easy-to-use infotainment screen, plus a new steering wheel. The folding metal roof is easy to operate and it offers, when it's closed, a refined and secure environment. The two-seater cabin is a pleasant place to spend time on long journeys and there's lots of equipment on board, including leather upholstery, cruise control and air conditioning. There are also various options available including park assist and adaptive LED headlights. On winding country roads, the SLC is precise and well-planted with a sharp driving experience. The roadster also corners well with no body roll to ring alarm bells. The entry-level SLC 180 is worth considering with its turbocharged petrol engine producing torque of 250 Nm and a 0 to 62 sprint time of 7.9 seconds. With its top speed of 140 mph, it will return economy of around 49 mpg and its handling is just as good as the better spec models. Standard kit includes alloy wheels, active brake assist, air conditioning, a sports braking system and a sports suspension. Essentially, the Mercedes SLC offers a roadster that is capable of delivering thrills and a rewarding drive but it's also a stylish and comfortable car to live with on a daily basis.
