The Mercedes SLC is an excellent cabriolet that has great engines to make it an ideal cruiser. There's also lots of equipment and comfort too.
The Mercedes SLC has a choice of great engines including a 2.1 litre 250d which should return 71 mpg with emissions of 114g/km which, considering the levels of performance this engine delivers, are excellent fuel economy figures; it will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds.
There are also two 2.0 litre petrol engines and a 3.0 litre V6 twin turbocharged unit for the AMG SL 43. All engines are fitted with fuel saving technology which help the petrol engines return around 44 mpg and emissions of 150g/km while the AMG V6 will return 36 mpg with emissions of 178g/km and excellent levels of performance. The 2.0 litre petrol engines will reach 62 mph in just under six seconds while the AMG version will do the sprint in 4.7 seconds. The engines are coupled to an excellent nine speed automatic gearbox and there's also a six speed manual gearbox available.
In the cabin, everything has been well-designed and well laid out with a touch of luxury to make it a great car for long journeys. The seats are comfortable and there's lots of adjustment for the driving position. However, the real joy for the Mercedes SLC is its refined cruising experience whether that is on winding country roads or travelling long distances on a motorway with the roof down or up; it's a car that delivers excellent feedback and performance. The metal roof can be lowered at speeds of to 25 mph and when in place the SLC feels like a coupe with lots of refinement. It helps that when the roof is down, the firm's excellent 'Airscarf' system helps to keep passengers' necks warm by blowing warm air onto the neck.
Among the standard equipment is a 7-inch infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, 17-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, cruise control and wind deflector. Other models come with larger alloys, a sport suspension and high-performance brakes. Among the safety kit is active brake assist and there's a long list of options which include a glass sunroof, lane keeping assist and satnav.
Essentially, the Mercedes SLC is a good-looking and well-made cabriolet that delivers lots of fun when behind the wheel and its low running costs help underpin its attractiveness.
