Overview of the Mercedes-Benz SL Class

Convertible offers pace and thrills

Great handling and refinement

When the all-new Mercedes SL was unveiled in 2018, it was paying homage to a famous incarnation that is more than 60 years old. While the looks are modern, the convertible offers great handling and lots of refinement.

Engines and performance for the Mercedes SL-Class

Of the four engines for the Mercedes SL, there's an impressive V6 4.0 litre unit delivering 367 bhp for the entry-level model and the V8 5.5 litre for the top spec comes with a more powerful 455 bhp on tap. The V8 will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds with the power being delivered effectively by the quick changing nine-speed automatic transmission. The entry-level model will do the sprint in 4.9 seconds and fuel economy will range from 28 mpg to 34 mpg. For those who fancy even more power, there is a V12 6.0 litre engine, producing 630 HP, available which will reach 62 mph in four seconds.

Equipment and handling

The new Mercedes SL uses lots of aluminium in its construction so it is lighter and more agile than it has been previously. Along with more equipment, it's also faster than the car it replaced. The muscular good looks and the easily recognisable long, sloping bonnet make it an attractive choice and it is a comfortable place to spend long journeys in. The interior has been well-designed and it's an easy car to live with, with brushed metal and soft touch plastics creating a nice environment. The metal folding roof is easy to use and Airscarf system, along with wind deflectors, help keep occupants warm when travelling in cold weather. The boot, as should be expected, is not particularly large but enough to carry a suitcase for a weekend away, for example. The suspension helps to smooth out bumpy roads and there's lots of equipment including parking pilot, alloy wheels, active brake assist and smartphone connectivity. Other models come with a high-performance braking system, a sports exhaust system as well as sports suspension to deliver better performance on winding country roads. There are various option packages including the addition of a front splitter and a diffuser trim strip and active body control for when cornering at speed. Essentially, the Mercedes SL is up against some stiff competition but for drive and handling and the sheer level of fun, it has the edge with a well-built and luxurious offering.
