Solid build and great performance

The Mercedes G-Class is an SUV with legendary off-roading status and for many, it's THE benchmark for those who enjoy cross country driving. While the exterior design has changed little since its launch in 1979, it has been revamped on a regular basis with the latest appearing in 2018.

Engines and performance for the Mercedes G-Class

The Mercedes G-Class features a brand-new 4.0 litre V8 petrol unit that is available in the AMG-tuned G63 models - which have an impressive spec to match their performance. Alternatively, there is a 3.0 litre  diesel unit with six cylinders delivering 286 HP to underpin the G-Class performance. As a diesel, it is quiet and smooth and is a good performer around town and on motorways, though fuel economy is around 30 mpg. The V8 version produces 585 HP and delivers supercar performance to help the G-Class sprint from 0 to 62 mph in an impressive 4.5 seconds. Mercedes says the engine will return 21 mpg, though drivers should expect less.

Equipment and handling

While the Mercedes G-Class retains the same style and exterior as the original incarnation, inside the revamp created a really impressive SUV. The nine-speed automatic transmission delivers the performance drivers are looking for and it utilises a dedicated software application which helps control the vehicle at low engine speeds when taken off-road. There are a variety of driving modes to help deliver precise feedback and the off-road mode delivers peace of mind. Indeed, the G-Class offers high levels of safety and impressive levels of handling regardless of the surface. While it's a pricey vehicle to own and run, the new model added driving assistance systems, quality leather seats and a new suspension. Everything in the cabin is well-designed and well laid out and everything is easy to reach. There are two 12.3-inch displays to create a 'widescreen cockpit' and three different styles for the displays. Essentially, the Mercedes G-Class offers an impressive level of performance and equipment and it's great to drive around town and on motorways but it is practically unbeatable when taken off-road and the level of luxury on-board creates a rewarding driving experience.
