The Mercedes-Benz EQS is the brand's flagship electric saloon: a 5.23-metre, five-seat car built to cover very long distances in near silence. If your driving is motorway-heavy and you want the quietest, most cosseting thing Mercedes-Benz makes on batteries, this is it.

It sits at the top of the electric side of the range, doing the job the S-Class does for petrol and diesel buyers. Reviewers consistently describe it as hushed, comfortable and technically ambitious, with a cabin that feels genuinely special.

The choice is simple enough: one body style, one electric powertrain family with a 112-122 kWh battery and rear- or all-wheel drive, and three trims - Premium, Premium Plus and Premium Plus Executive.

About the Mercedes-Benz EQS

The EQS is a purpose-built electric luxury saloon rather than a converted petrol car, and it shows in the packaging: five seats, a deep 610-litre boot, and 1,690 litres with the rear seats folded.

Road testers reliably praise the refinement, the range and the driver-assistance systems, and they're just as reliable in pointing out the downsides - it's a very wide car for British multi-storeys, and rear headroom is merely adequate for a car this long, thanks to that swooping roofline.

Every version comes with a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty, plus a battery warranty covering 10 years or 155,000 miles and guaranteeing 70% of capacity. Servicing is every 12 months or 15,500 miles.

Why lease a Mercedes-Benz EQS?

Because the EQS arrives generously equipped whichever trim you pick, and leasing lets you run the newest battery technology for a fixed term without owning it when the next leap forward arrives. Every version carries the same core kit.

That core includes a panoramic opening roof, heated front seats and heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry and start, adaptive suspension and four-wheel steering - which matters more than you'd think on an 11.9-metre turning circle for a car this size.

Safety kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition, a 360-degree camera and front and rear parking sensors. Euro NCAP awarded the EQS five stars, with 96% for adult occupant protection.

Which EQS powertrain is right for me?

There's one powertrain family here - fully electric - so the real decisions are battery size, how much power you want and whether you need all-wheel drive. All are automatic.

Electric

A 112-122 kWh battery, 362-577 bhp and rear- or all-wheel drive, with a WLTP range of up to 542 miles on the longest-legged version. It needs charging, so a home wallbox makes life far easier: 0-100% takes 11.5 hours at 11 kW on the best version.

On the road, expect 0-62 mph in 4.1 to 6.2 seconds depending on version and a 130 mph top speed. The fastest public charging is 350 kW, giving 10-80% in 25 minutes on the best version. Our electric car guide covers the basics if this is your first EV.

Which EQS trim should I choose?

All three trims share the same generous standard kit, so the differences come down to wheels, seat technology and the head-up display system. Start with Premium and work up only if the comfort features earn their place.

Premium

The entry trim, and hardly sparse: LED headlights, hard disc navigation, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sliding sunroof and leather upholstery, on 20-inch AMG 5 Spoke alloy wheels. It also gets a head-up display, heated rear seats and a powered tailgate.

The Premium is currently available from £1,358.96 a month.

Premium Plus

Over the Premium, this adds the MBUX augmented navigation head and the multicontour seat package with massage function pro in the front, plus ventilated front seats. Wheels step up to 21-inch AMG Multi Spoke alloys, and the upholstery stays leather.

The Premium Plus is currently available from £1,452.06 a month. Against the Premium, that is currently £93.10/mo more expensive.

Premium Plus Executive

Over the Premium Plus, the Executive adds the MBUX augmented reality head and a head-up display, on the same 21-inch AMG Multi Spoke alloys with leather upholstery. Heated rear seats are available as a factory option here rather than fitted as standard.

The Premium Plus Executive is currently available from £1,532.50 a month. Against the Premium Plus, that is currently £80.44/mo more expensive.

Mercedes-Benz EQS FAQs

Up to 542 miles on the WLTP test, on the longest-range version; the range across the line-up runs from 478 miles. Efficiency is quoted at 3.6-3.8 miles per kWh. Real-world figures fall short of WLTP in cold weather, as with any electric car.

610 litres with the rear seats up, rising to 1,690 litres folded. It's a wide, fairly shallow space behind a hatchback-style tailgate, so it swallows suitcases easily but tall items less so. There's no front boot, and the spare is a tyre repair kit.

For a family of up to five, yes. Euro NCAP gave it five stars with 91% for child occupant protection, there's a big boot and huge rear legroom. Reviewers do note that the sloping roof limits rear headroom for very tall adults.

Yes, up to 1,700 kg braked on the strongest version, with 1,600 kg the figure lower down the range, and 750 kg unbraked. Roof load is 100 kg. Check the towing figure on the individual version before you order, because it varies.

Three years with unlimited mileage, which suits high-mileage leases well. The battery is covered separately for 10 years or 155,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of capacity. There's also a two-year paintwork guarantee and six-year anti-corrosion cover.

It depends entirely on what's available at the time - the cheapest EQS to lease isn't always the cheapest one to buy, and offers change as stock and pricing are refreshed. The Premium is currently from £1,358.96 a month. Compare the live EQS lease deals, or browse the wider Mercedes-Benz range.

Measure your parking. At 5.23 m long and 2.14 m wide including mirrors, the EQS is tight in older multi-storeys and some width restrictors. Also confirm your home charging setup - over 25 years of arranging leases, that's the detail EV customers most often leave until last.

Specifications from Mercedes-Benz's UK data and Euro NCAP; equipment, range and availability vary by version, so check the individual deal before you order.
