The Mercedes CLS is an excellent four-door coupe that offers the space of a traditional saloon and excellent handling. It shares the underpinnings of the impressive E-Class with the 2018 revamp offering all-new mild-hybrid powertrains.

Engines and performance for the Mercedes CLS

Engine choices for the Mercedes CLS include a 2.0 litre petrol unit and a 3.0 litre petrol engine producing 299 hp. There's also a 3.0 litre petrol offering delivering 435 hp and all have a small mild electric hybrid system to boost power and improve economy. The performance levels are impressive, with the entry level model reaching 62 mph in under six seconds while the AMG CLS 53 will do the same sprint in 4.5 seconds - that's matching sports car performance levels. Economy ranges from 50 mpg to 32 mpg for the AMG versions. There's also an impressive and economical 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel unit available.

Equipment and handling

The cabin for the Mercedes CLS is impressive as a premium offering and is unmistakably a Mercedes. The third-generation offers the same responsive handling and performance of its predecessors and there's a lot to like about it. It's a nice car to handle around town, but particularly impressive on motorways for long journeys. There are two 12.3-inch screens available and are operated either by using a controller in the centre console or from the steering wheel. There's ambient lighting with 64 colours and illuminated air vents that will shine either red or blue when the climate control is adjusted. The seats are very comfortable and there's a practical boot of 520 litres. Among the equipment list is a reversing camera, LED headlights and 19-inch alloys. There are also several option packs that boost the spec considerably - especially for safety systems which some drivers may want to consider. Essentially, the Mercedes CLS is an impressive coupe offering a smooth and quiet driving experience, which makes it a sound choice for those racking up lots of motorway miles.
