The Mercedes B-Class is an impressive MPV that offers lots of space and there are some great engines to deliver power. As a people carrier, it's been a popular choice for those who want a stylish and well-equipped vehicle.

Engines and performance for the Mercedes B-Class

There are four engines available for the Mercedes B-Class with the B180 and the B200 using an efficient 1.3 litre petrol engine producing 138 HP and torque of 200 Nm. For the B200 those figures are slightly higher and both engines will return around 52 mpg with emissions of 125g/km. There's also a 2.0 litre diesel unit available producing either 148 HP or 188 HP and torque of between 320 Nm or 400 Nm. The diesel unit should return around 65 mpg with emissions of 115g/km. All of the engines are mated to the firm's eight- or seven-speed DCT automatic transmission.

Equipment and handling

The Mercedes B-Class was relaunched for 2019 and improvements included better safety and driver assistance systems, including the firm's voice activation offering. There's also a 7-inch cockpit display along with a 7-inch infotainment screen. New equipment includes a reversing camera, larger alloy wheels and a satnav. Safety kit includes speed limit assist and lane keeping assist. The AMG Line comes with a three-spoke multifunction sport steering wheel plus body styling and radiator grille changes. Mercedes also offers various options including larger media displays and a parking assistance package along with rear and front parking sensors. The most expensive option package sees the addition of electrically-adjustable front seats, a panoramic glass sunroof and adaptive high beam assist. Out on the road, the Mercedes B-Class delivers the firm's renowned driving experience and the engines are responsive. It's an agile performer around town and particularly comfortable on long motorway trips. It's also a quiet cabin and the vehicle is well-designed for those who carry passengers frequently with the suspension absorbing lumpy roads. The Mercedes B-Class is an easy car to live with and is comfortable to drive with some excellent driver assistance systems to keep occupants safe in a variety of situations.
