Overview of the Mazda CX-3

Engines and performance for the Mazda CX3

The Mazda CX-3 has a strong 2.0 litre petrol engine producing either 121 HP or 150 HP. Fuel economy is around 45 mpg and the engines are responsive, particularly for motorway driving. The larger petrol unit in the higher spec versions comes with four-wheel drive to boost grip on slippery surfaces and it's a handy addition for those who want to tow caravans or trailers. The six-speed manual box is very good and there's also the option of a six-speed automatic, which has smooth shifting and is particularly useful on longer journeys.

Equipment and handling

The Mazda CX-3 is an attractive choice in the compact SUV sector and along with nice handling and an impressive cabin, there's also a very long equipment list to attract buyers. The all-round impression is of an upmarket creation with nice exterior styling and good engines. The CX-3 received a facelift in late 2018, with the trim levels also being tweaked. The standard equipment includes satnav, alloy wheels, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity and cruise control. There's also a 7-inch colour touchscreen, DAB radio and keyless ignition. Other models come with rear parking sensors - which some might find useful in tight parking spaces - climate control, privacy glass and lane departure warning. The top model, the Mazda CX-3 Sport Nav+ has larger alloys and sports seats. The model also has front and rear sensors, a reversing camera, a head-up display and adaptive LED headlights. The cabin has been designed for practical use and the higher stance gives a good view of the road ahead. There's plenty of room for everyone on board, though very tall adults may feel squeezed in the rear seats and there's enough boot size for luggage and shopping. However, while the CX-3 is slightly dearer than its rivals, it's certainly one of the best compact crossovers to drive with good feedback from the steering. The CX-3 is a pleasantly surprising offering on winding country roads with the firm suspension really showing what it can do to control body roll. The Mazda CX-3 is an excellent offering in a competitive segment and it's certainly worth shortlisting for those who like lots of equipment and a great car to drive.
