In 2022 Lotus announced the Lotus Eletra, Lotus ‘s first-ever SUV, the first Lotus with four doors and its first-ever mass-market electric car; it is also the first ever Lotus to be built in China by Lotus parent company Geely, in a factory located in Wuhan.
Geely also produces the Zeekr 001 in China and has joint venture connections with Swedish EV manufacturer Lynk & Co, a subsidiary of Volvo, and the Polestar brand. So, is this a Lotus as we know it, or is it a Sino-Swedish SUV with a Lotus badge?
According to Lotus, the all-new electric Lotus Eletre is a Hyper SUV, taking the Lotus DNA from almost 75 years of sports car design and engineering a dynamic SUV.
The name Eletre is a Hungarian word meaning “coming to life”, and it fits because Lotus say it marks the start of a new chapter in the company's history.

Looking closely at the design, you can see elements of Lotus, particularly from the Lotus Evija and the Lotus Emiri; however, the Eletre is an SUV and tradition-heavy, not something generally associated with the philosophy of Colin Chapmans Lotus.
To keep the weight down, the Eletre design incorporates an Airflow system through the bodywork vents on the top of the bonnet and air curtains along the side that sends air out through the wheel arch; incorporated in the front grille is an array of triangular vents that open and close depending on required airflow to cool the electrical components specifically the battery and the motors.
The very distinctive headlights are semi-concealed, whether dipped or on main beam; if you see them in your rear mirror, you will be undoubtedly about what is behind you.
Looking at it in the profile, you start to get a picture of how big the Eletre is; it is an E-segment SUV which means in terms of its size, it is similar to a BMW X7, Mercedes GLS or Tesla Model X even with the optional 23” wheels look a little bit dwarfed by the sheer size for the Electra.
The sculpted shape of the doors which have flushed pop-out door handles and no door mirrors; instead, it has cameras on an internal screen. there's also an electrically operated cover for the charging port., and a system of ultra HD cameras are part of a Lidar 3D scanning and range detecting system that has the Eletre ready for autonomous driving.
At the rear of the cars is a deployable rear spoiler which changes angle depending on your speed and what driving mode you happen to be in. A huge light bar is another excellent touch; it stays red by default during everyday driving, and it acts as animated indicators when turning.
The interior is distinctively Lotus but has been taken to a whole new level, pleasing to the eye, the split-level dashboard mimics the design of that split spoiler at the rear, a blade of light that runs the entire width of the dashboard and offers multiple screens to inform the driver.
With three separate screens on the other side, you get a 30cm ribbon display, which forms part of the instrument binnacle; the passenger gets their own display. In the middle, you have an impressive retractable 15.1 “ display.
You have tangible buttons and switches on the centre console and this fabulous-looking steering wheel; there's also lots of storage in the illuminated big door bins.
There are currently two powertrains both have a 22kWh AC charger.
A very high spec superbly engineered luxury car with stunning looks and performance which will set the tone for future SUVs. Leasing is a good option for this car.
