The Kia Sorento is a seven seat SUV that impresses with space and equipment. There's a distinct swing away from MPVs and this offers a practical choice for families by marrying an SUV's capabilities within MPVs practicality.
There's only one choice of engine, an impressive 2.2litre turbodiesel which produces 194bhp. With the manual gearbox versions, the Sorento will return around 48 mpg and have CO2 emissions of 155g/km; excellent figures for a vehicle of this size and weight. Opt for the automatic gearbox version for the Sorento and economy will drop to around 42mpg with emissions of 175g/km. The engine itself is responsive and will reach 0 to 62 mph in under 10 seconds and has a top speed of 118mph which makes the car feel agile and responsive on Tarmac.
The Kia Sorento is undoubtedly an all-round family vehicle that provides comfort and space for seven people in an impressive package. It's a big car but it's no less practical nor functional for it and it is extremely well made. And with its all-wheel drive, the Kia Sorento grips the road and also offers a good level of off-road performance too. It's this off-road ability which means the Sorento has a soft suspension which soaks up the bumps on poor roads but it does create body roll on tight corners.
Kia have also added an impressive equipment list for the money which includes Bluetooth connectivity, air con, cruise control, 17-inch alloy wheels and iPod connection. Other models come with self-levelling suspension, satnav, leather seats and keyless entry. The model above entry level, the KX-2, is probably the best buy and comes with a useful reversing camera. The Sorento is designed to be a practical family carrier and the interior is well-designed and made from robust materials which should take a large amount of punishment. The rear seats are only small and suitable for children but there is a lot of space on board with the boot measuring 116litres in size. With the third row of seats folded down that will expand to 516litres but with the middle row folded flat the boot size will expand to an impressive 1,530litres of space. Essentially, the Kia Sorento is one of the reasons that families are switching from the once-popular MPV class to an SUV that offers a lot more.
