Overview of the Hyundai I30

Great hatchback offering

Lots of equipment and nice handling

The latest version of the Hyundai i30 is a great hatchback creation and growing in popularity. Along with nice handling and a composed feel, there is a lot of equipment and the car is a sound challenger in a competitive segment.

Engines and performance for the Hyundai i30

There are three engines to choose from - two petrol units, a 1.0 litre and 1.4 litre unit - and a 1.6 litre diesel engine. All are turbocharged with the 1.0 litre unit producing 120 PS and is coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. The 1.4 litre unit delivers a responsive performance with 140 PS and the choice of either the six-speed box or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The diesel engine produces 115 PS and again has the choice of transmissions with the manual box offering CO2 emissions of 99g/km. All of the engines feature intelligent stop and go which will switch the engine off when the car comes to a stop. The engines also offer good performance around town with the diesel unit impressing on motorway journeys. Expect fuel economy for the 1.4 litre petrol engine to be around 49 mpg, while the diesel unit returns around 65 mpg.

Equipment and handling

While the Hyundai i30 is an impressive hatchback, it's also available as a Tourer estate and a Fastback plus there's the hot hatch version in the shape of the excellent i30 N. For those who are looking for a quality family car with lots of equipment fitted as standard, there's a lot to recommend the i30. Safety kit includes lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. Some models also feature a nice 8-inch touchscreen for satnav and media display. The entry-level model features alloy wheels, USB connection, Bluetooth connectivity, a DAB radio and LED running lights. Other models feature larger alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, leather steering wheel, satnav and smartphone connectivity. All models are nice to drive and are good performers around town - the larger engines are impressive on long motorway journeys. Comfort levels are high and the car feels well-built with an interior cabin made from sturdy materials to suit family life. For those who aren't interested in a car's badge then the Hyundai i30 offers a value-for-money offering and delivers a sound and comfortable family car that is reliable and well-equipped.
