To compete in the fiercely fought family hatchback sector, Hyundai has brought out a cracking car that is not only great value for money and packed with kit but really does offer a viable alternative to the likes of the VW Golf. That car is the i30 and it's a very comfortable car to drive with excellent engines and an impressive five year warranty. Indeed, the i30 has been a popular car in the motoring world having won a number of awards with judges being impressed with its build quality and spacious interior.
The excellent 1.6 litre CRDi Blue Drive engine is a brilliant production and will return 76 mpg on the combined fuel cycle with CO2 emissions of 97g/km to make this a car free from road tax, under current rules. There's also a strong and good performer in the shape of the 1.6 litre diesel, with a power output of 126bhp it's an agile and strong engine and will still return around 74 mpg. The petrol engines are also well-made and strong though the 1.6 litre version, when coupled to the firm's six speed automatic gearbox, will return only 41 mpg.
There's lots of space on board the i30 which will carry five adults quite easily, along with their luggage, and there's lots of storage space dotted around the cabin. The boot measures 378 litres which compares well with its rivals but when the rear seats are folded flat it will increase to a more useful 1,316 litres. The cabin itself is quiet with very little road noise and the suspension deals with potholes and rough roads quite easily. It's also good performer in towns with the steering providing good feedback and it's excellent as a motorway cruiser. Despite the soft suspension setting, there's little body roll on corners.
There's no doubt that the spec level for the i30 will impress with even the basic model coming with air con, electronic stability control, Bluetooth connectivity and front fog lights. Other models come with cruise control, dual zone climate control and automatic headlights and wipers. The top spec models come with heated front seats and leather interior. Essentially, the i30 provides a comfortable and assured performance as a family hatchback and while it may not be as dynamic as the Focus it is an excellent performer in many respects with frugal engines and lots of kit to compensate. A worthy consideration in the sector and one that scores very high marks indeed.
