The choice is simple. One body style, two powertrains - a 1.2-litre turbo petrol with 145 bhp or a 54 kWh electric with 154 bhp and up to 248 miles of WLTP range - and three trims: Pallas, DS Performance Line and Etoile.

If you mostly drive in town, park in tight spaces and care how a car looks on your driveway, the DS 3 makes sense. If you regularly carry adults in the back, look at something larger.

About the DS DS 3

The DS 3 is a premium-badged compact SUV in its second generation, on sale in this form since 2022. It seats five, carries 350 litres in the boot with the seats up and comes with a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty.

Reviewers consistently praise the cabin materials and the detailing, which really is unlike anything else at this size, and they like the soft, relaxed way it rides around town. The consistent criticism is space: rear leg room and headroom are tight for adults, and the thick rear pillars make the back seats feel enclosed. Road testers also note that it prioritises comfort over sharp handling.

Measured against its Stellantis cousins, the DS 3 trades outright practicality for design and finish. That's the deal, and it's worth knowing before you order.

Why lease a DS DS 3?

Because the standard kit list is genuinely strong and the same across the range. Every DS 3 has a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, LED headlights, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless phone charging.

Also standard: air conditioning, privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding mirrors, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, an electric parking brake and DAB radio. Practicality-wise, the boot holds 350 litres with the rear seats up and 1,050 litres folded, the turning circle is 10.7 m, and the petrol version can tow up to 1,200 kg braked.

On a lease, the warranty period covers the typical contract length, and the electric version's battery is separately covered for 8 years / 100,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of capacity. Servicing is every 24 months or 16,000 miles.

Which DS 3 powertrain is right for me?

There are two: a 1.2-litre turbo petrol and a 54 kWh electric. Both are automatic and front-wheel drive, so the real question is whether you can charge at home or at work.

Petrol: 1.2-litre turbo, 145 bhp

A three-cylinder turbo petrol with 230 Nm, a six-speed automatic gearbox and 0-62 mph in 9.2 seconds. WLTP economy runs from 51.1 to 62.1 mpg depending on version, with CO2 of 112 g/km. It's the pick if you cover long or unpredictable distances and don't want to think about charging. Insurance group 21.

Electric: 54 kWh battery, 154 bhp

The electric DS 3 offers a WLTP range of up to 248 miles, 260 Nm and 0-62 mph in 9.0 seconds. At 100 kW, the best version charges 0-80% in about 30 minutes; on an 11 kW home or workplace supply, 0-100% takes around five hours. Insurance group 29. Which DS 3 trim should I choose?

Three trims, and the gap between them is mostly wheels and cabin trim rather than technology, because the safety and infotainment kit is standard throughout.

Pallas

Pallas is the entry trim and it wants for very little: LED headlights, a mirror screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a black perforated leather steering wheel with contrast stitching, a parking camera, and front and rear parking sensors. You get 17-inch "Dublin" alloys, cloth upholstery and keyless entry and start. The Pallas is currently available from £423.11 a month.

DS Performance Line

DS Performance Line is about appearance rather than extra equipment: it swaps in 17-inch "Oslo" alloy wheels, with cloth upholstery inside. If you prefer that wheel design and the sportier look, it's a straight style choice. The DS Performance Line is currently available from £425.50 a month. Against the Pallas, that is currently £2.39/mo more expensive.

Etoile

Etoile steps up to 18-inch "Nice" diamond-cut alloy wheels and a black leather steering wheel. It's also the trim where the tempting options live: adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, matrix LED headlights, heated and massaging front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat and lane-keep assist are all available as factory options. The Etoile is currently available from £421.46 a month. Against the DS Performance Line, that is currently £4.03/mo cheaper. Best value
