Engines and performance for the Citroen Berlingo
There is a choice of three diesel and two petrol engines with all of them offering responsive performance with the petrol unit delivering better performance in towns while the diesels are excellent for long journeys. The 1.2 litre PureTech petrol unit offers outputs of 110hp or 130hp with the 1.5 litre BlueHDi diesel engine offering 75 hp, 100 hp or 130 hp. The engines are mated to either a six-speed manual box or an eight-speed automatic transmission. Economy for the petrols is around 55mpg with the diesels returning around 68mpg.
Equipment and handling
While the Citroen Berlingo is based on a van it offers car-like handling. It's not only a well-priced offering but there is a lot of space. The sliding rear doors help to set it apart from rivals and there's an 8-inch colour touchscreen for the infotainment system which is easy to use and features Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, DAB radio and satnav is an option. The interior has been designed with practicality and hard-wearing materials in mind - so it's an ideal environment for families or those who like to enjoy the outdoors regularly. There are two versions of the Berlingo available, the M model seats five people while the XL is a seven-seater - the rear seats fold down, though not completely flush into the boot. The Berlingo has a boot size of 775 litres which extends to 1,050 litres with the rear seats folded flat. The Berlingo is a solid, well-made offering and the Grip Control with hill descent assist system offers great traction on slippery surfaces - even on a very steep incline. While the Citroen Berlingo will not be to everyone's tastes, for those who want a spacious MPV - or leisure activity vehicle - it offers an excellent creation with nice handling and lots of equipment.
