Overview of the BMW Z4

Roadster offers agile handling

Lots of comfort in a refined offering

The all-new BMW Z4 was relaunched in 2019 with the classic roadster offering a sportier driving experience than it did previously. There's also lots of comfort in what is a refined and impressive car.

Engines and performance for the BMW Z4

The BMW Z4 has a choice of three engines with more power being produced than the Z4's previous model. The sDrive 30i produces 258 hp and torque of 400 Nm to deliver a 0 to 62 sprint time of 5.4 seconds. The car has a top speed of 155 mpg with fuel economy of 39 mpg. The entry-level model, the sDrive 20i has an engine producing 197 hp and it will complete the sprint time in 6.6 seconds, with a top speed of 149 mph. The top model is the BMW Z4 M40i with an engine producing 340 hp and torque of 500 Nm so its sprint time is an impressive 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph. Fuel economy is around 33 mpg. All of the engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic sports transmission as standard which also features a launch control function to deliver a better standing start.

Equipment and handling

The new BMW Z4 has retained the car's iconic long bonnet and low driving position but with improved dynamic performance as well as more precise handling. The body structure is rigid with improved aerodynamic properties. There's a choice of nine body colours plus two for those wanting the convertible with the cabin delivering lots of comfort with the controls within easy reach. The integral head restraints are model specific and the leather upholstery is fitted as standard. It helps that are heated seats for those wanting to enjoy their Z4 for open-top driving. The wind deflector is an option and this fits flush between the rollover bars and the boot size is 281 litres which is larger than the previous model. Along with the impressive turbocharged engines, the carmaker has installed a variable sport suspension as standard with electronic control dampers. As a result, the Z4 is a nimble performer and is particularly confident when cornering at speed. Opt for the Z4 M Sport, then it comes with a sports suspension and brakes along with a differential and high-performance tyres. The result is a roadster with improved sporty handling abilities to deliver great fun while behind wheel. Among the options is active cruise control, parking assistant including the firm's reversing assistant and it's also the first roadster from BMW to have a head-up display so drivers can see immediately the car's information. For those wanting a stylish and excellent roadster that delivers agile handling while enjoying a comfortable cabin, then the BMW Z4 in all its guises is a hard-to-beat offering.
