The BMW X6 M Competition utilises a twin-turbocharged V8 4.4 litre petrol engine to deliver an astonishing output of 625hp and maximum torque of 750Nm. The fuel economy is 23 mpg and emissions are 284g/km. However, the engine delivers supercar performance with a sprint time of 3.8 seconds.

Equipment and handling

The new BMW X6 M Competition is the third generation of the high-performance performance SUV, though BMW refers to it as a sports activity vehicle. The car delivers a luxurious offering; the cabin has been well-designed and made from premium materials and it's a spacious place to spend time. Most drivers will be choosing the stylish car to enjoy the handling and the high-revving engine delivers thrills. The car uses an eight-speed transmission with the firm's Drivelogic system and it is mated to an all-wheel-drive system. Drivers can alter the set-up so there is a rear bias which will prove useful on racetracks. Safety features include active roll stabilisation, though there's little in the way of body roll when driving on winding country roads, and there are electronically controlled dampers with a variety of settings. The X6 M Competition also has 21-inch light alloy wheels for the front and 22-inch alloy wheels for the rear axle. The stopping power comes from the M compound brakes and there's an integrated braking system to help stop the car when necessary at speed. The BMW X6 M undoubtedly looks like a BMW creation with its large kidney grille and double bars along with a rear spoiler. The exhaust system features two sets of twin tailpipes and the X6 Competition has special paint finishes available. Standard features include a head-up display which can be altered to show 'sport' settings or 'road' settings and the leather upholstered seats are comfortable and cosseting. There are buttons for accessing and adjusting the steering, braking, dampers and engine and the paddles on the steering wheel for changing gear are easy to use. The BMW X6 M also comes with parking assistant so parking what is a sizeable car should never be a problem and there's also BMW's 'live cockpit professional' that has satnav and the firm's intelligent personal assistant. There's a lot to like about the BMW X6 M which offers startling levels of performance - it will certainly give a supercar a run for its money - and it offers impressive levels of agility and manoeuvrability around town to make it a practical and luxurious SUV to live with - albeit one that happens to be incredibly fast.
