Overview of the BMW X5

Engines and performance for the BMW X5

Engines for the BMW X5 include a six-cylinder 3.0 litre turbocharged diesel unit producing 400 hp and it is a responsive engine, particularly at low revs. The unit delivers a 0 to 62 mph sprint time of around five seconds. There's also a six-cylinder 3.0 litre petrol engine, producing 340 hp to deliver a sprint time of 5.5 seconds. BMW will offer the X5 with a plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range of 50 miles to help boost its already attractive proposition.

Equipment and handling

The fourth-generation of the BMW X5 made its first appearance in 2018 and just about everything onboard was renewed or redesigned. The new model delivers better smartphone connectivity and luxury items plus a new 12.3-inch touchscreen and new operating system. Along with agile handling, the X5 has all-round air suspension to deliver a comfortable ride on rutted roads around town but it also performs well on winding country roads and for those who take their X5 off-road, it's a capable performer. Some models have an anti-roll system and BMW have added four-wheel steering to help control what is a large vehicle. The X5 also comes with BMW's impressive laser light technology so drivers can see the road ahead for up to 500 metres. The touchscreen uses hand gestures as well as speech to control it and the instrument cluster has been refreshed. The X5 also features 'intelligent personal assistant' so it remembers and learns from the driver's behaviour and will integrate this into everyday driving. Basic standard equipment includes climate control, automatic LED headlights, alloy wheels and leather seats. The other trim, the M, delivers aggressive body kit styling, larger alloy wheels and sporty trim touches in the cabin. Other models come with a sports exhaust system and a differential to deliver power to the relevant wheels to boost performance. The BMW X5 is an impressive offering - there's very little wrong with it - and for those who want a large SUV, the driver's view is excellent and it's a fun to drive car with very high comfort levels.
