The BMW X5 is a big contender in the competitive SUV segment and has lots of space and powerful engines to help make it a bestseller. In addition, the equipment list will impress.
The engines for the X5 are not just powerful, they are also economical too and there's also a plug-in hybrid available. Unlike other BMWs, the naming of the X5 can create confusion.
For instance, the BMW X5 25d actually has a 2.0 litre diesel engine underneath the bonnet whereas the 30d has a 3.0 litre diesel. Opt for the X5 5i and the engine is a 4.4 litre petrol unit. The hybrid is the 40e which has an electric motor and a 2.0 litre petrol engine which will return 86 mpg with a zero road tax.
All the engines are good, strong performers with the entry-level sDrive 25d SE offering 53 mpg while having agile performance and the xDrive 50i is the quickest and will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in less than five seconds. Interested drivers should also take a look at the xDrive 30d which will return 48 mpg while reaching 62 mph in 6.8 seconds.
The X5 is a fun vehicle to drive and it's also more comfortable than it's ever been. There's a choice of two or four-wheel-drive, the latter being xDrive models, and performance on- and off-road will impress.
The steering is accurate and responsive and the car, despite its size, is agile and handles well. The auto gearbox has eight speeds which have a smooth action. There's plenty of space on board and equipment levels are high which includes dual zone air con, alloy wheels, satnav, leather seats, DAB radio and an infotainment system. Safety kit includes electronic stability and traction control, parking sensors and automatic braking.
Essentially, the X5 is a large SUV with sporty credentials that is one of the best of its type and drivers will be pleased with its performance.
