Overview of the BMW X3

Engines and performance for the BMW X3

The BMW X3 is powered by a good choice of petrol and diesel engines with the M40i offering 349bhp to deliver strong performance that belies the SUV segment's usual standards. The 2.0 litre diesel unit produces 188 bhp and should return around 42 mpg with a sprint time from 0 to 62 mph of eight seconds. An eight-speed automatic transmission is fitted as standard to help deliver the power effectively to the wheels. There's a faster performance from a 3.0 litre diesel engine producing 261 bhp and there is a plug-in hybrid that utilises a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol unit. Using a boost function, the hybrid will deliver 290 bhp for a sprint time of 6.1 seconds.

Fuel economy for the diesel engines is around 40 mpg with the petrol units returning between 31mpg and 35 mpg.

Equipment and handling

With the SUV sector becoming ever more popular with families, the BMW X3 delivers a vehicle with lots of space, excellent levels of handling and a very classy interior. Indeed, it's an impressive driver's car with more off-road functionality than many of its rivals and it is packed with equipment. The X3 follows in the footsteps of the X5 with a sleek dashboard and a well-designed cabin consisting of premium materials. There's leather upholstery along with gloss black or aluminium accents to make this a comfortable place to spend time. Standard features include the firm's digital display instead of analogue dials along with LED headlights, a reversing camera and 18-inch alloy wheels. Out on the road, despite the size, the BMW X3 delivers an agile and rewarding driving experience. The adaptive suspension is controlled by various driving modes and in comfort setting, it is an excellent car for dealing with rough roads and for driving around town. The X3 is also an excellent motorway cruiser that is not only comfortable when travelling long distances but the responsive engines deliver lots of revs when necessary. The driver's seated position is excellent with the seat offering lots of adjustment and there's a good view of the road ahead. There's also little in the way of body lean when driving quickly along winding country roads thanks to the suspension and chassis. Essentially, the BMW X3 is an impressive SUV that is a practical and sound choice for families - or for those wanting a spacious and great-to-drive car - with lots of power, technology and comfort to enjoy.
