The BMW i5 Estate is a fully electric executive estate: five seats, a 570-litre boot and a 5.06-metre body that carries a family and its luggage without turning into an SUV. It's the load-carrying version of BMW's electric 5 Series.

It suits drivers who want space and quiet rather than height and bulk - long motorway miles, a dog, bikes, a boot that swallows a fortnight's worth of bags. Charging at home or at work makes it far easier to live with.

The choice here is simple: one electric powertrain with an 83.9 kWh battery, three everyday trims - Sport Edition, M Sport and M Sport Pro - and the 593 bhp M60 above them.

About the BMW i5 Estate

The i5 Estate is the electric estate in BMW's line-up, sitting between the smaller executive models and the larger SUVs. It offers five seats, a 570-litre boot with the rear seats up and 1,700 litres folded.

Electric estates of this size are still rare, which is much of the appeal - reviewers regularly point out that it's a refreshing alternative to yet another electric SUV. What they praise most consistently is refinement: it's quiet, smooth and settled on a motorway, with body control that stays tidy despite the car's weight.

The criticisms are consistent too. It's a long car, and road testers note that the turning circle of 11.7-11.9 m makes tight car parks a bit of a juggle. Range depends heavily on speed and temperature. BMW covers it with a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, and the battery for eight years or 100,000 miles.

i5 Estate or i5 Saloon?

The Estate gives you more boot and more roof capacity; the Saloon gives you a slightly lighter car. Both have five seats, both measure 5.06 m long, and both tow 1,500-2,000 kg braked depending on version.

The Estate's 570 litres with the rear seats up compares with 490 litres in the BMW i5 Saloon, and the Estate carries 100 kg on the roof against the Saloon's 75 kg - worth knowing if a roof box or bike carrier is part of the plan. The Estate is the heavier car, at 2,180-2,350 kg kerb weight against 2,120-2,295 kg.

If you'd rather see both shapes side by side, the full BMW i5 range is here, and there's more from the brand on our BMW leasing pages.

Why lease a BMW i5 Estate?

Every i5 Estate arrives well equipped, so you're choosing character rather than filling gaps. Heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, a powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation and a digital instrument cluster are standard across the range.

The driver-assistance kit is thorough: autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beam, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera and self-steering parking. Ambient lighting, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers and power-folding mirrors feature throughout too.

On the leasing side, the questions we get asked most about this car are about charging and mileage. Servicing falls every 24 months, and a tyre repair kit takes the place of a spare - so factor a realistic annual mileage into the contract rather than guessing low.

Which i5 Estate powertrain is right for me?

There's one powertrain, in several states of tune.

Electric

An 83.9 kWh battery (81.2 kWh usable) drives either the rear wheels or all four, with 335-593 bhp and an automatic gearbox. WLTP range runs from 309 to 359.8 miles depending on version, and charging peaks at 205 kW, which on the best version means 10-80% in 30 minutes.

At home, the best version will take 0-100% in 4.3 hours on a 22 kW supply. If you're new to this, our electric car guide and our advice on charging an electric car cover the practical side.

Which i5 Estate trim should I choose?

Four trims, and the differences are mostly wheels, seats and suspension rather than missing equipment.

Sport Edition

The entry version has 335 bhp and rear-wheel drive, on 19-inch Triplex Spoke Style 933 alloys with artificial leather upholstery. It brings adaptive LED headlights, a leather multi-function steering wheel, a wireless charging tray and an ambient lighting pack, plus keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate, privacy glass and front sports seats.

M Sport

M Sport swaps to 19-inch Double Spoke Style 935 M alloys and leather with artificial leather upholstery, and adds sports suspension plus electrically adjustable lumbar support for driver and front passenger. A head-up display, panoramic glass roof, heated steering wheel and adaptive suspension are available as options.

M Sport Pro

M Sport Pro moves up to 20-inch Star Spoke Style 938 M alloys and adds launch control. The rest follows M Sport, including the same option list of head-up display, panoramic roof, heated steering wheel, fixed towbar and adaptive suspension.

Then there's the performance version.

M60

The M60 makes 593 bhp through all-wheel drive, 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds, on 20-inch Aerodynamic Style 940 M alloys. It adds a Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system, electric seat memory, four-zone climate control and adaptive suspension, with massaging and ventilated front seats available as options.

Optional packs sit on top of a trim rather than replacing it, including the Tec+ and Tech+ packs with Parking Assistant Professional, Comfort+ and Comf+ packs, a 22kWCh pack and the Ultimate Pack.

BMW i5 Estate FAQs

Yes. It seats five, the boot holds 570 litres with the rear seats up and 1,700 litres folded, and a powered tailgate is standard. Reviewers rate the refinement highly on long journeys. The 5.06 m length is the thing to check against your driveway.

WLTP range is 309 to 359.8 miles depending on version, with efficiency of 3.3-3.9 miles per kWh. The rear-wheel-drive versions go furthest; the 593 bhp M60 sits at the lower end. Real-world figures fall in cold weather and at sustained motorway speeds.

The fastest rate is 205 kW, and the best version will go from 10-80% in 30 minutes at that speed. On AC, the best version completes 0-100% in 4.3 hours at 22 kW. Home charging is slower but far cheaper overnight.

It can tow up to 2,000 kg braked, with the limit ranging from 1,500 kg depending on version, and 750 kg unbraked. A fixed towbar is a factory option on Sport Edition, M Sport and M Sport Pro, so specify it at order stage - it can't be added to the contract later.

BMW gives three years with unlimited mileage, which covers most lease terms comfortably. The high-voltage battery has its own eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty. Servicing is due every 24 months, and the car carries a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel.

It depends entirely on what's available at the time. Trim, term, mileage and initial rental all move the monthly figure, and the cheapest version to buy isn't always the cheapest to lease. The deals below are live and cover the Estate only - our team can check anything you can't see listed.
