Overview of the BMW I3

Excellent all-electric offering

Well-made premium compact car

The BMW i3 is one of the best all-electric cars currently available and while it is small in size, it has a lot to offer. Revamped at the end of 2018, the i3 offers up to 193 miles on one battery charge. The i3s offers more power for those who may need it.

Engines and performance for the BMW i3

When it was relaunched, the BMW i3 saw its battery storage capacity being doubled to 120Ah. This means the battery's electric range was improved to 193 miles, though some drivers may get 223 miles. The electric motor delivers 170 hp for responsive performance with a sprint time from 0 to 62 mph of 6.9 seconds in the BMW i3S and a slightly slower time for the standard i3. The top speed for the i3 is 93 mph and for the i3S it is 99 mph.

Equipment and handling

The BMW i3 is a premium compact car that has helped switched-on drivers enjoy all-electric driving and zero emissions. The car also has lots of innovative ideas, plus cutting edge technology but it is a practical and comfortable car to live with on a daily basis. The revamp saw a new exterior colour choice and also new colour options for the interior. BMW also introduced wireless charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Since the lithium-ion batteries are installed deep in the i3's floor, there's a cooling system to keep them working at the optimum operating temperature to help boost service life and output. Using a rapid charging station, the BMW i3 will reach 80% of total power in 42 minutes, while charging at home can take nearly five hours. Using a household socket, the charge time can take 15 hours. As should be expected, the BMW i3 is a near-silent car and it is an enjoyable small vehicle to drive around town – it is a surprisingly nippy and agile car to deliver fun - and it's also a responsive vehicle on motorways. Standard kit includes LED headlights while there's the option of adaptive LED headlights with automatic selective dipping function. The interior is spacious and a lovely place to spend time, it has a funky design and the 10-ich infotainment system with satnav is excellent. Essentially, the BMW i3 is a great looking premium compact that is a quality offering for those who want to switch-on to all-electric driving.
