The BMW i3 is a hatchback with eye-catching futuristic looks that offers low running costs and a fun drive. The design will not suit everyone but it is a great car for driving around town.
The head-turning BMW i3 is available as either a petrol-electric hybrid or as a purely electric vehicle; both are excellent choices. However, opt for the all-electric version and the driver is limited by how far the batteries will last.
The petrol-electric hybrid uses the conventional engine as a range extender while charging the batteries when the car is moving. For many people this will be the better choice, particularly if they make longer journeys occasionally.
This is not a hybrid vehicle; the BMW i3 is a fuel efficient car that will return 470mpg. It's important to realise that the petrol engine does not drive the wheels but, instead, charges the batteries. Those who opt for the all-electric BMW i3 will find that their batteries will be charged cheaply at home and will provide enough power to cover 100 miles.
The first thing that will impress the driver is that the BMW i3 is no slouch from a standing start; it's very quick indeed when setting off. To illustrate it's 'electric' performance, the BMW i3 will sprint from 0-62mph in just under eight seconds.
Along with its futuristic looks, the car also has a lot of hi-tech in it which sees the removal of conventional dashboard instruments to be replaced with two touchscreens that will display everything a driver needs. There's also a lot of equipment on-board including satnav, parking sensors, DAB radio, automatic wipers and headlights. Safety equipment includes electronic stability control, six airbags and a seatbelt reminder alarm.
While the i3 has a smaller cabin than one would expect, it's still a comfortable place to be that's been well-designed and feels airy and light. It's a great car to drive on long journeys but really comes alive when driven around town. There's also no need to worry about the petrol engine and knowing when to use it as it's all done automatically and the engine can barely be heard.
Essentially, the BMW i3 offers an impressive hatchback that has a futuristic design and incredible low running costs; however the most attractive feature is that it's fun and easy to drive.
