Engines and performance for the BMW 4 Series

There's a choice of petrol and diesel engines for the 2022 BMW 4 Series. The entry-level model has a 1.5 litre turbocharged unit that is a good performer and there's a 3.0 litre twin-turbocharged offering as well for blistering pace. The 4 Series also has a 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel unit and an excellent 3.0 litre twin-turbocharged engine too. The engines are mated to a manual gearbox though the eight-speed automatic transmission delivers the smooth gear shifting for the car to be thoroughly enjoyable. The petrol engines offer 0 to 62 mph sprint times of between 5.9 seconds and 7.3 seconds. All of the engines are smooth performers and the diesels offer sprint times of 4.7 seconds to 7.4  seconds. The best fuel economy is for the entry-level diesel unit which will be 50 mpg.

Equipment and handling

The latest BMW 4 Series model has been refreshed and updated. It's still an appealing offering in a competitive segment and it delivers an excellent BMW-inspired driving experience. For those wanting a coupe, it is also available as a convertible, offering practicality and excellent performance, then the 420d is probably the best bet. It also offers the best economy and a decent 0 to 62 mph sprint time of 7.4 seconds. Around town, the 4 Series steering delivers good feedback and it's a comfortable and stable motorway cruiser that will eat up the miles. However, the suspension helps to deliver an excellent driving experience on winding country roads when the car is being put through its paces. Standard equipment includes two-zone air conditioning, satnav and 18 inch alloys. There are also heated sport seats and the firm's ConnectedDrive with online services. The 4 Series M Sport delivers racier looks with various styling tweaks, a different binnacle for the instruments and an improved media package. As a two-door coupe, the 4 Series is easy to live with and it has an interior that is a classy offering with some very nice design ideas. Essentially, the BMW 4 Series is a comfortable and practical coupe offering for those who are wanting a fairly economical and impressive car to drive.
