Engines and performance for the Audi A6
All of the engines feature mild hybrid technology to boost electric operation at low speeds and the Audi A6 has a choice of two smooth but powerful engines. There's a 3.0 litre TFSi petrol V6 turbocharged unit delivering economy of around 42 mpg. The engine will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.1 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. The alternative is a 3.0 litre TDI unit delivering 52 mpg and similar levels of performance. The engines are mated to an automatic transmission: the diesel unit uses an eight-speed tiptonic set-up while the petrol engine utilises a seven-speed S tronic unit. Also fitted as standard is quattro all-wheel drive to ensure that the power is delivered to the wheels and the car remains planted when the A6 is put through its paces.
Equipment and handling
The Audi A6 was relaunched in 2018, with a revamped exterior and an improved interior. Indeed, Audi has the best reputation among carmakers for their cabins and the A6 offers a futuristic black panel design to underline its executive saloon credentials. The instrument panel is sleek and the centre console faces the driver. This is the eighth generation of what has been a popular car with an intuitive all-digital operating system delivering quick access to the car's functions. It's also highly configurable to suit the driver's preferences - or up to seven drivers if necessary. The standard touchscreen is 8.8 inches or there's the option of a 10.1-inch touchscreen with satnav. The separate 8.6-inch display is for the convenience functions including climate control. Audi's virtual cockpit which uses an LCD screen is available as an option, as is a full-colour head up display and both are certainly worth considering. There's also a lot of connectivity and convenience, including smartphone connectivity and driving assistance systems, including parking pilot for autonomous parking - drivers can also use an app to park their car without being in it. The reworked chassis helps deliver a smooth, comfortable and also rewarding driving experience; the A6 is an excellent choice for those who rack up lots of motorway miles and it's also surprisingly agile around town.
