Sometimes people want something extra from their car even when it's already a great performer and that's the case of those who own the excellent 595 which is derived from the Fiat 500. The Abarth range has something of a legendary reputation in motoring circles because when they first appeared in the 1960s they were a huge hit; the firm takes a Fiat car and makes it faster and improves handling to create something fresh. Available in two trim levels, the Competizione and Turismo, the 595 also comes with an extensive options list to help personalise the car.
The 595 costs more to run than its Fiat 500 stablemates but it should still return around 44 mpg. There's just one engine for the model - a 1.4 litre turbocharged unit which will power the vehicle from 0 to 62 mph in just under eight seconds thanks to its output of 135bhp. Its top speed is 129 mph. However, the power can be boosted so it's top speed increases to 131 mph with 160 bhp. And because the designers have made the 595 into a sports car, the suspension is a lot firmer to handle corners at speed which helps to make the car a fun and thrilling one to drive - though it is something of a hard ride and potholes will be felt in the cabin.
Obviously there isn't much space in the boot for the 595, perhaps a decent amount of shopping, though the interior is surprisingly roomy for four adults. The steering itself is nicely weighted and it's easy to manoeuvre around town and it's also fun to drive on the motorway; the engine is responsive, and with its nimble performance makes everything a fun experience. Some may find the noisy exhaust will irritate on very long journeys however. There's no doubt that this is a performance car and to help keep it under control there is electronic stability control with electronic brake transfer. There are also several airbags and hill hold assist.
