The engines are responsive and include two 2.0 litre diesel engines with four cylinders which are a great choice for those who rack up lots of miles and there are two refined petrol engines that are great around town. The entry-level model has the D4 diesel unit producing 190 HP and is coupled to an excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox. This particular engine will deliver economy of 64 mpg and emissions of 119g/km. For those who like better levels of performance, then the D5 engine will produce 235 HP and responsiveness is boosted with innovative technology that the firm calls 'PowerPulse'. The system uses compressed air to help wind-up the turbocharger at low revs to overcome turbo lag- it's an effective system and delivers similar performance levels to a supercharged engine.

As should be expected, the Volvo V90 has a list of equipment that can safely be described as luxurious, with even the entry-level Momentum trim coming with leather upholstery, two-zone climate control, heated front seats, keyless engine starting and LED headlights with active beam. There's also the excellent Sensus infotainment system available as standard which incorporates a 9-inch touchscreen and satnav with a lifetime of map updates available. The V90 also features a voice control system and delivers access to the Internet so drivers can access a range of apps to help them. However, it's the Volvo V90's semi-autonomous drive that will be a big feature for those attracted to the estate car and the system automatically keeps the car at a set distance and speed from the vehicle in front. The system also takes care of acceleration, braking with traffic flow and gives steering inputs so the V90 remains within its lane at speeds of up to 80 mph.
