Overview of the Volvo V40

Excellent small premium hatchback

Lots of safety equipment on board

Since it is competing in a tough segment, the Volvo V40 is a premium hatchback that makes a sound choice against the likes of the BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes A-Class. It's been a popular buy since it first appeared on the UK's roads and a refresh in 2016 gave the V40 a look similar to the firm's larger models.

Engines and performance for the Volvo V40

The Volvo V40's refresh saw the introduction of a new look for the front and also a boost to the engine line-up. Of these, the D2 is perhaps the most popular of the engines and with emissions of just 89g/km, it's a sound choice that performs well around town. There's also the choice of a 2.0 litre diesel unit that delivers more power and the 2.0 litre petrol engines are also good performers - particularly if you will be spending most of your time driving in urban areas rather than on motorways.

Equipment and handling

The Volvo V40 trim structure was also altered in the refresh to include the Momentum and Inscription models along with the R-Design, a sports-inspired performance car and the Cross Country, a rugged version of the V40. There's also the firm's On Call smartphone app which enables remote access and control by the driver to a wide range of features. It's also possible for those who have an Apple watch to access these features so you can, for example, set the satnav destination before you get into the car. As usual, the Volvo creation has an impressive list of safety equipment and it was one of the first vehicles to have autonomous emergency braking fitted as standard, though it's now known as city safety and works at speeds of up to 31 mph when the car will apply the brakes automatically should a crash be impending. This was also the world's first car to offer an airbag that would protect pedestrians in an accident and options include adaptive cruise control, cross traffic alert, lane keeping assist and road sign information.

Whether driving at speed on motorways or around town, the Volvo V40 offers an engaging and comfortable drive and there's no body roll on corners with the wheels offering plenty of grip. It's a well-designed car with lots to offer and the interior is particularly comfortable for those who like a stylish and driver-focused environment.
