Overview of the Volvo S60

Engines and performance for the Volvo S60

In 2019, the Volvo S60 saw a plug-in hybrid being added to the line-up in the shape of the T8 Twin-Engine offering producing 390hp. It's only available in the R-Design Plus trim and has a 2.0 litre petrol engine producing 303hp and an electric motor producing 87hp for the driver to enjoy a combined output of 390hp. The 0 to 62 mph sprint time is an impressive 4.6 seconds. There's an all-electric range of 36 miles and the fuel economy, Volvo says, is 177 mpg. Drivers also have the choice of an impressive 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol unit delivering 247 bhp and the diesel offering has been dropped from the S60's line-up.

Equipment and handling

As a mid-size saloon, the Volvo S60 offers an impressive interior that certainly takes the fight to its premium German rivals. Indeed, the interior is similar to the V60 estate sibling with an upmarket look and feel with an impressive central display containing the infotainment system and other features. The S60 also has Volvo's Pilot Assist system which is an effective way of making long motorway journeys more relaxing and safer with a semi-autonomous offering. Depending on the model selected, the Volvo S60 delivers an impressive suspension setup for a comfortable ride, particularly around town and there is little in the way of body roll on winding country roads. Opt for a suspension with a relatively stiffer setup, then the sporty handling is one to enjoy with the powerful engine. The cabin is also a quiet place to spend time and all models feature full LED headlights which turn in the direction of the steering wheel to ensure a better view when cornering. Some models also come with a reversing camera, which some drivers may find to be convenient, and all S60s feature front and rear parking sensors. There is a 9-inch tablet style touchscreen featuring a satnav that is easy-to-use and some models come with smartphone mirroring. The interior has lots of soft touch materials being used and Volvo added leather upholstery for its cooling and heated front seats, a head-up display and steering wheel mounted paddles in the car's 2019 revamp. There's also a voice activated control system that is easy-to-use. This is the third generation of the Volvo S60 and it's a premium offering in a competitive segment with the hybrid delivering an interesting and economical opportunity for saloons, particularly for business drivers.
