Overview of the Volvo EX90

Volvo says that this seven-seater EV crossover delivers a statement about where they are going – which, it appears, is going to be a long way. Both powertrain guises easily achieve over 300+ miles on the combined WLTP cycle, from a single charge.

Volvo EX90

Volvo EX90 in a nutshell

Both Volvo and sister company Polestar have been pushing hard to gain carbon neutrality. It’s worth noting too that the Volvo EX90 range consists of lots of recycled materials, including the fabric for the seats.

Meaning around 25% of the aluminium, and 15% of the steel has been recycled. Volvo says 50% of the plastics have been recycled also as the firm heads towards complete carbon neutrality for its vehicles by 2040.

In terms of competition there are not many seven seat all electric vehicles available for lease in the UK. Larger EV's include SUV's like Audi Q8 E-Tron, and BMW's IX, but these have five seats. Kia's EV9 is on the way, but we don't expect the luxury to be in the same league as the Volvo. In real terms the EX90 is like a Range Rover in terms of presence and luxury, only with zero emissions, no fuel bills and a silent drive, think about that for a moment.

Volvo EX90 - Powertrains & Performance

Power Output

At time of writing there are two choices of power output in the Volvo EX90 range. There’s the standard version which delivers 402 bhp, or the ‘Performance’ alternative with a mighty 510 bhp.

Range & Performance

In both derivatives, drivers get a 111kWh battery with the standard version offering a range of 364 miles, while the Performance delivers 360 miles of range due to the higher performance available. The battery can be recharged in less than 30 minutes when using a suitable rapid charger.

The top speed of the EX90 is restricted to 112 mph, the same for all Volvo vehicles, and the sprint time from 0 to 62 mph is 5.9 seconds in the standard version, while the Performance offers a blistering 4.9 seconds, which for a fully fledged seven seat SUV a little other-worldly. A bit like the car itself.

Volvo EX90 - Equipment & Safety

Digital Seatbelt

To give you an idea of the saftey features on board the Volvo EX90, it has so many sensors and chips on board, that the firm refers to the software as a ‘digital seatbelt’.

Not only will drivers and occupants enjoy the prospect of fewer accidents, but the EX90 can drive fully automated. However, that’s not possible in the UK, currently, but the adaptive cruise control feature on the motorway is mightly impressive none-the-less.

Scandanavian Interior Design

Internally, drivers get a 14.5-inch upright display that’s much quicker than the version found in the XC90 sibling. The interior has a Scandinavian look and feel and there’s a 3D rotary controller in the lower console.

Volvo has also done away with the instrument binnacle and replaced it with a digital screen and the gear selector is on the steering column.
The screen has lots of pre-settings including various controls and the temperature and there’s lots of space for everyone, including those in the third row.

The boot size is 655 litres with the rear seats folded, or 310 litres with the seats in place, but when the second and third row of seats are folded flat, drivers get an impressive 1,950 litres of boot space.

There are two variants but just one trim from launch available and drivers get the latest in computing power, including over-the-air updates for the infotainment system.

There’s also 5G connectivity and a range of Google apps along with the wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Music lovers will enjoy the Bowers and Wilkins sound system and there’s an extensive list of equipment, with the Ultra trim getting four-zone climate control, a panoramic glass roof and air suspension. Drivers also get soft-closing doors, a driver attention monitor, a cabin air purifier and pixel LED headlights. You had me at hello.

Volvo EX90 - Summary

Volvo with their new EX90 gives drivers a futuristic, well-designed luxury car that leads the market in safety technology with powerful performance and a well-crafted interior and exterior. As a luxury SUV choice, for those wanting seven seats, then the all-electric EX90 is for you.
