Engines and performance for the Volkswagen Touran

When the latest Volkswagen Touran model was unveiled, it featured new engines that were nearly 20% more efficient than the units they replaced and all of them are Euro6 compliant. There are five engines to choose from - three diesel and two petrol units, with outputs that range from 110 PS to 190 PS. That's plenty of power for most family needs and the entry-level model features a 1.2 litre petrol unit producing 110 PS and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox that is a great performer around town, even when it is fully loaded. For those who would like an automatic gearbox, then you need the 1.4 litre petrol engine or either of the diesel units with the 2.0 litre TDI offering excellent performance around town and on long motorway journeys.

Equipment and handling

As should be expected, the Volkswagen Touran offers a sturdy, well-made and practical choice for family transportation with even the entry-level model enjoying lots of kit. This includes a pre-crash system and an automatic post-collision braking system. There are also seven airbags, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, seven seats and roof rails. Also, for those who might be wary about a family car with seven seats the rear seats will accommodate an adult comfortably - which isn't always the case with cars of this size.

The range-topper comes with adaptive cruise control, 17-inch alloy wheels, a driver profile selection system to help with the various modes a driver might want and air conditioning with an allergen filter. Other models come with city emergency braking, parking sensors and a rain sensor while the option of an extra-large panoramic sunroof, which comes complete with integrated lighting, is also highly recommended.

Out on the road, the Volkswagen Touran offers a good stance and there's little in the way of body roll when cornering, even at speed. Though most Touran drivers, particularly with family members on board, will not be pushing this family cruiser to its limits, it still delivers an enjoyable and rewarding drive and it is above all a very safe car to own and it is one that will not let you down.
