When it comes to choosing a seven-seater that is functional and robust; the Sharan is the leader of the pack. The cabin is comfortable and quiet with impressive levels of refinement and this is a comprehensive family package that many will enjoy. The seating is supportive which means that adults can be carried in comfort over long distances and the seats can be switched to create space for carrying large items.
To underline this, the boot measures 375 litres with all the seats in place which is about average for a seven-seater but fold down the rear seats and that expands to an impressive 2,297 litres. However, it for its car like driving ability that the Sharan proves popular with owners who can enjoy winding country roads as well as the motorways with a confident car that is agile and fun to drive. This performance is underpinned with a range of excellent engines that deliver great performance and decent fuel economy for the size of the vehicle.
Of those, the 2.0 litre diesel BlueMotion with 138 bhp power output is the most efficient and should return around 50 mpg on the combined cycle while having CO2 emissions of 146g/km. The comfort abilities of the Sharan have been enhanced with a suspension system that deals with rough roads with ease. Volkswagen have installed electronic adaptive chassis control which has three settings of normal, comfort and sport depending on the environment and whether the driver wants a sportier drive. There's also an excellent level of sound insulation to help make the vehicle a very quiet and enjoyable drive and even the engines are barely heard, even at high speed.
As you would expect, the interior for the Sharan is spacious, particularly for those vehicles fitted with the panoramic sunroof, though all models feel bright and airy. Safety equipment to help the driver keep control of the vehicle includes electronic stability control and there are also seven airbags on board too. The steering is excellent and there's very little body roll despite the vehicle's size and standard equipment includes air con while other models get Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels and parking sensors. Essentially, the Sharan is a practical family car that feels robust and sturdy and it should bring years of excellent service with good levels of refinement and an excellent choice of engines.
