Engines and performance for the Volkswagen Caravelle

The Volkswagen Caravelle comes with a choice of 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel engines producing either 150hp or 199hp. Both are good performers and are responsive when needed so overtaking, for example, on motorways is easy. There's a choice of either a manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic transmission which is a smooth changer and easy to live with. Volkswagen also offers its Caravelle with its all-wheel-drive 4Motion system for those times when drivers may need to deal with slippery surfaces or muddy country tracks.

Equipment and handling

A revamp in 2019 of the Volkswagen Caravelle saw a range of improvements, including the interior and exterior styling. There's also a new dashboard and improved safety and technology kit. The first thing to mention is that the interior has some very clever design ideas and there is lots of space and a range of seating arrangements on offer. This means the Caravelle is a sound choice as a practical family car that is practical and the top models are ideal for use as executive transporters. In many ways, the Caravelle is the best offering in this segment with a quality offering and lots of comfort. Since the Caravelle is based on the Transporter van's platform, don't think that the MPV doesn't offer a rewarding driving experience. While it's not quite the same as those MPVs that are based on a car platform, it's still an agile and responsive vehicle that delivers stability when driven at speed. The Caravelle is practical and functional, the middle two seats will swivel to create a lounge-style space so the rear seats face each other and there's a folding table included. For those who want to have the option of sleeping, then this is available so it becomes a stylish campervan too. Safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking and the revamp introduced automatic crosswind assist to help make steering easier in extreme weather conditions. There's also automatic parking, lane keeping assist, rear traffic alert and traffic sign recognition in those models with satnav. Essentially, the Volkswagen Caravelle is a sound proposition for those who want a spacious and stylish MPV that offers lots of great design ideas, but also in comfortable and impressive surroundings with lots of equipment.
