View dealThe Volkswagen Caddy is a van-derived MPV built for families and businesses who want genuine space in something no longer than an ordinary family hatchback. At 4.50 m long, it's the practical, square-sided option in Volkswagen's line-up rather than the stylish one.
It's a five-door MPV in one body style, with five or seven seats depending on the version, a boot of up to 1,213 litres with the rear seats up, and a 3-year / 100,000-mile manufacturer warranty. Road testers consistently praise the amount of usable room and the car-like way it drives.
The choice is simple: a 1.5-litre petrol or a 2-litre diesel, both automatic and front-wheel drive, in Life or Style Edition trim. You can see the rest of the Volkswagen lease range if the Caddy turns out to be more vehicle than you need.

The Caddy is the passenger version of Volkswagen's small van, and the current fifth-generation car has been on sale in this form since 2020. Reviewers describe it as surprisingly car-like from the driver's seat.
What they praise, almost without exception, is the packaging. Headroom is generous, and boot space runs from 191 litres up to 1,213 litres with the rear seats up, depending on the version.
The criticisms are consistent too: hard-wearing rather than plush cabin plastics, a tall one-piece tailgate that needs clearance behind you, and a shape that never really pretends it isn't related to a van. If that doesn't bother you, little else in the class carries as much.
Because every Caddy arrives well equipped for family duty and the leasing side is straightforward: you pick the version, agree the term and mileage, and hand it back at the end. Practicality and safety kit are standard rather than scattered across option packs.
Adaptive cruise control, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, self-steering parking, lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking are fitted to every version, alongside a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, air conditioning, roof rails, rain-sensing wipers and an electric parking brake. Euro NCAP awarded the Caddy 4 stars, with 80% for child occupant protection.
Towing matters to a lot of Caddy customers: up to 1,500 kg braked, with a detachable towbar available as an option on both trims. Worth checking your intended caravan or trailer weight before you order, because the towbar has to be specified at build.
Two engines, both automatic, both front-wheel drive. Neither needs plugging in, so the decision comes down to how far you drive and what you tow.
The petrol suits shorter, town-based journeys and lighter loads. It records 42.2-42.8 mpg on the WLTP test with CO2 of 151-152 g/km, reaches 62 mph in 11.9 seconds, and pairs its four cylinders with a seven-speed automatic gearbox. Insurance groups are 10-13.
For high mileage, a full load or regular towing, the diesel makes more sense. It returns 50.4-51.4 mpg with CO2 of 145-146 g/km, offers up to 320 Nm of torque and gets to 62 mph in 11.4 seconds. Our petrol or diesel guide covers the trade-off in more detail.

Two trims: Life covers the essentials properly, Style Edition adds comfort and driver-assistance kit on bigger wheels.
Life rides on 16-inch "Wien" silver alloy wheels with cloth upholstery, and includes wireless app connect for Apple CarPlay, a rear-view camera, keyless go with SAFELOCK and a multi-function display. Heated front seats, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, built-in navigation and a fixed panoramic glass roof are all available as options.
The Life is currently available from £417.98 a month.
Style Edition swaps to 17-inch "Colombo" black diamond turned alloys and adds heated front seats, an upgraded keyless central locking system, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, rear cross-traffic alert and active lane-change assist. Navigation, the panoramic glass roof, a detachable towbar and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror stay on the options list.
The Style Edition is currently available from £458.96 a month. Against the Life, that is currently £40.98/mo more expensive.
If you want the space without the van shape, the Škoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat are worth a look. Need more length again, and the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi is the long-wheelbase answer.
