View dealThe Volkswagen Caddy Maxi is the long-wheelbase version of Volkswagen's compact MPV, built for people who need genuine space rather than a fashionable shape. It seats five or seven, measures 4.85 m long, and comes with a 3-year / 100,000-mile manufacturer warranty.
It suits big families, grandparents on the school run, dog owners, cyclists, taxi and private hire drivers, and anyone who has looked at a seven-seat SUV and found the third row usable only by children. Tight car parks are easier to manage with this car.
The choice here is simple: one body, two automatic powertrains - a 1.5-litre petrol or a 2-litre diesel - and two trims, Life and Style Edition.

The current Caddy Maxi is the fifth generation, on sale in this form since 2020. It sits apart from Volkswagen's SUV line-up as the practical option: a boxy, glassy MPV designed for practicality.
Reviewers consistently praise the space and the car-like manners, noting that this generation feels far less van-like to drive than earlier Caddys. The usual criticism is that the cabin is plain and hard-wearing rather than plush, which is rather the point.
Numbers back it up. The boot runs from 446 to 1,720 litres with the rear seats up, depending on version, and 3,105 litres with the rear seats folded. Euro NCAP awarded the Caddy four stars.
Because every version arrives well equipped for family duty. Adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and self-steering parking are standard across the range, alongside air conditioning, roof rails and an electric parking brake.
You also get keyless entry and start, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, DAB digital radio, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights and power-folding mirrors on every trim. Euro NCAP scored it 80% for both child occupant protection and vulnerable road users.
On a lease, the practical questions we get asked about this car are usually about seats and towing. Decide early whether you need five or seven, and if you tow, check the braked limit for your chosen engine before you order - it differs between petrol and diesel.
Two engines, both automatic, both front-wheel drive, neither needing to be plugged in. Mileage and towing are what separate them.
Smooth and quiet for shorter runs and town work. It produces 114 bhp with a 7-speed gearbox, reaches 62 mph in 11.9 seconds, returns 40.9-41.5 mpg on the WLTP test and tows up to 1,400 kg braked. Insurance groups 11-13.
The one for high-mileage drivers and towing. It gives 120 bhp, 49.6 mpg on the WLTP test, 149-150 g/km CO2 and a 1,500 kg braked towing limit - the range maximum. If you do mostly short urban journeys, our petrol or diesel guide is worth a read first.

Life covers the essentials properly: 16-inch "Wien" silver alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, wireless app connect for Apple CarPlay, a rear-view camera, keyless go with SAFELOCK and a multi-function display. Heated front seats, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, built-in navigation, a panoramic glass roof and a detachable towbar are all available as options.
The Life is currently available from £433.92 a month.
Style Edition adds 17-inch "Colombo" black diamond-turned alloy wheels, heated front seats, an upgraded keyless central locking system, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, rear cross-traffic alert and active lane-change assist. Navigation, the panoramic roof, a detachable towbar and an auto-dimming mirror remain options.

If you want the space without the MPV shape, the Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat are large estates with big boots. The shorter Volkswagen Caddy does the same job in a smaller footprint. More from the brand on our Volkswagen leasing page.
