It might be based on a van but the VW Caddy Life offers a comfortable seven-seater MPV. It also has style and economy to create a great family vehicle.
There's an impressive range of engines based on a 2.0litre TDi with a variety of outputs; they are 74bhp and 101bhp. There's also a very good 148bhp but most drivers will opt for the 101bhp engine since it offers the best performance and economy. Drivers should expect the engine to deliver economy of around 70mpg which is impressive considering the size of the vehicle and its capabilities.
For anyone wanting to carry seven people and their luggage with plenty of space to spare, then the Caddy Life is for you. This is effectively a rugged load carrier that has a huge area on board so seven adults can sit comfortably and it's also a very quiet and agile cruiser. Adapted from the firm's hugely popular Caddy line-up of small vans, the interior is extremely well built and durable; this car will take a lot of punishment.
However, some may worry that the rear row of seats is a fixed bench which means it's not as flexible as some other people carriers but the bench can be removed quite easily.
The ride is accurate and there's little body roll on corners and at high speed on motorways it's a very quiet car to drive considering its dimensions. It goes without saying that the boot is big, it's actually 520litres and the rear doors open wide so it means access is easy for bulky items. With the second and third row of seats being folded flat, the boot size will rise to an impressive 3,900litres.
In addition, the side sliding door is easy-to-use and means that access to the rear seats is easy. It should also be noted that because the Caddy Life began life as a van, it is a durable and well-built vehicle.
Standard equipment includes ABS and traction control, front airbags, air con, alloy wheels and remote central locking. Essentially, the Caddy Life makes for a great family car - if you need the space and the rugged interior. It's much better than most van conversions and great fun to drive.
