It may be the first big seller for retro-style cars, but the VW Beetle still has style and with low running costs and great engines it's a great choice for drivers. The Beetle is available in either its hatchback or cabriolet guise, with both being great cars.
Among the engines for the VW Beetle, there is an excellent 1.2 litre TSI petrol engine which produces 104g/km and a more powerful 1.4 litre unit which produces 158 bhp. VW also offer the Beetle with a 1.6 litre TDI BlueMotion engine which is best for economy - it will return 66 mpg while having emissions of 113g/km. For more spirited performance, drivers could opt for the 2.0 litre TSI petrol engine, which is used most commonly in the special editions, which will return 38 mpg and has 197 bhp. A lot of the parts in the Beetle are also found in the Gulf which means the car is reliable, efficient and the engines are responsive.
As a premium supermini, the VW Beetle has a stylish and comfortable cabin and decent handling. The ride is comfortable and the Beetle grips the road effectively to give an enjoyable ride; the driver's view is particularly good and there is also a decent amount of equipment on board too. This includes air con, remote locking, DAB radio, ABS and electronic stability control. Other models come with more kit, the Sport trim, for instance, adds leather sports seats, larger alloy wheels, parking sensors, heat insulating tinted glass and two zone climate control. Standard safety equipment on all Beetles includes anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and six airbags.
In its various guises over the years, the VW Beetle has become one of the world's biggest selling cars and it's still offering a strong package along with value for money. After its revamp, the Beetle is an excellent car though some may miss the dashboard vase.
