Engines and performance for the Volkswagen Arteon

Of the engines, the Volkswagen Arteon comes with two 2.0 litre diesel units producing either 148 bhp or 187 bhp. The smaller diesel unit is an excellent cruiser for long distances, particularly with the excellent seven-speed automatic transmission. There's also a twin-turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder unit producing 237 bhp which delivers a startling sprint time of 0 to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds. Petrol lovers get the choice of a 2.0 litre engine delivering 187 bhp with a top speed of 149 mph and there's an impressive turbocharged unit delivering 268 bhp to offer a sprint time of 5.6 seconds. The faster Arteons have the firm's four-wheel drive system, called 4Motion, fitted as standard to deliver the power and driver confidence.

Equipment and handling

The Volkswagen Arteon is an excellent coupe with a stylish exterior. It's a well-made and well-designed offering with a big boot to deliver a practical five-door car. Volkswagen calls this a fastback and there's plenty of space for everyone. The interior has a premium look and feel with soft touch materials and is clearly aimed at attracting potential buyers from some of VW's prestigious rivals. Behind the wheel, the Arteon is a comfortable car to drive with the suspension delivering an agile ride and the comfort driving mode offering a softer suspension but still performing well. The car is good at cornering but even better with the 4Motion system. In 2019, a new entry-level SE trim was added to the Arteon range to offer impressive value. It's available with just the 2.0 litre petrol engine and an automatic transmission, though VW says a diesel unit will be added. The entry-level model features alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, satnav, three-zone climate control and an 8-inch touchscreen display. There's also the firm's wireless app connects system for smartphone connectivity along with parking sensors. Volkswagen has also improved the range for 2020, with the addition of a 9.2-inch touchscreen and a new 2.0 litre petrol engine with active cylinder technology that will shut down two the engine's four cylinders when necessary to boost fuel economy. There's also a long options list to help personalise the Arteon offering, including active lighting and a driver monitoring system. Essentially, there's a lot to like about the Volkswagen Arteon and for those racking up lots of motorway miles, the ride is a comfortable and quality experience with the car's performance on winding roads being accomplished. The Arteon is also a sound choice for family car buyers with lots technology and safety features.
