The Subaru XV is a crossover with a difference - it actually delivers some impressive off-road performance. It's also a practical and sound choice for on-road use as well with excellent handling and economy.
With a choice of two engines, both are 2.0 litre and available in petrol or diesel; the petrol engine delivers 148 bhp and is a nippy performer around town. The diesel variant is cheaper to run and performs better off-road with its 145 bhp power output and emissions of 141g/km, so a lot depends on the potential owner’s needs with fuel economy ranging from 40 mpg to 52 mpg. The diesel is also good when cruising at speed and has plenty of torque.
The engines are coupled to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, though this is only available with the petrol engine, with the CVT gearbox delivery positive performance. With a manual gearbox, the diesel should reach 62 mph in 9.3 seconds.
The Subaru XV has undergone a facelift and the stylish looking vehicle is also a comfortable one when taken on long journeys or taken off-road. Indeed, it's a decent off-road performer and certainly more so than many of its SUV crossover rivals.
The all-wheel drive helps to deliver lots of grip so there's very little body roll particularly when cornering and it's an assured performer. There's also lots of equipment on board to make it an interesting alternative to the market leaders including a tyre pressure monitoring system. There's also lots of safety kit on board too, in many categories it's one of the safest cars currently available, with traction control and ABS.
Essentially, the Subaru XV has a typical solid build that the carmaker is renowned for and it offers lots of space on board with good performance; the car is a sound choice for those who want some off-road performance in a nice package without having an SUV-type of crossover.
