There's just one engine choice for the Ssangyong Rexton and it's a 2.2 litre diesel engine producing 181PS. The unit delivers lots of torque with 420Nm and it is a particularly good performer in low revs to shift heavy loads. It's also an effortless cruiser and the automatic version works well. The engine returns around 35 mpg but when pushed with a heavy towing load, this will go below 30 mpg. The engine is mated to either a seven-speed automatic transmission, sourced from Mercedes, or a six-speed manual box. Both are sound performers with smooth shifting.

Equipment and handling

The Ssangyong Rexton is a large SUV with plenty of space on board for five people and there's a seven seat option available. It's also packed with equipment and while the brand is little known, the new cars come with a seven-year or 150,000 mile warranty to bring peace of mind. There's a lot to recommend the Rexton which is a comfortable car to drive around town but it's best when taken off-road and the engine is a sound performer which really comes into its own when towing the likes of caravans or horseboxes. The multi-link suspension works well to deliver a smooth ride and the (long) equipment list includes leather seats, heated steering wheel, anti-lock braking and electronic stability assistance featuring hill start assist and hill descent control. There's also forward collision warning, high beam assist and lane departure warning. Drivers will also get to enjoy electronic cruise control and a solar, noise control windscreen as well. Because of the Rexton's size, there is a front obstacle warning system featuring four sensors and there's reverse warning as well and the car also has a 3-D surround view monitoring system. There's also a 9.2 inch HD infotainment screen featuring satnav and the rear view camera as well as Bluetooth smartphone connectivity. While it may not be on the top of your shopping list when you want a large SUV, there's a lot to like about the Ssangyong Rexton which is a well-designed and comfortable car to spend time in with an impressive list of equipment to make it a sound choice when compared with its more expensive and better-known rivals.
