Overview of the Ssangyong Korando

Engines and performance for the Ssangyong Korando

The Ssangyong Korando has the choice of a revamped 1.6 litre diesel engine or a new turbocharged 1.5 litre petrol unit. There are also plans for an all-electric model to join the line-up. The petrol engine produces 161 bhp and the diesel engine produces 134 bhp with lots of torque to make it a popular choice for those towing caravans and the like. The engines are mated to either a six-speed automatic transmission or a manual gearbox. The diesel should return around 52 mpg, while the petrol unit returns 44 mpg and the predicted range for the all-electric version is expected to be 250 miles - an impressive offering for the segment.

Equipment and handling

The fourth generation of the Ssangyong Korando was launched in 2019 with an impressive revamping of the vehicle. It's a stylish offering with lots of space on board and there's a premium feel to the interior with a long list of safety and driver assistance systems available. There's a lot to recommend the Korando as a practical and appealing choice for families with standard equipment including a 10.25 inch digital instrument display and there's a 9-inch infotainment system. SsangYong also added a rear view camera to most models and the better spec versions get leather upholstery. The car is easy to drive despite being a large SUV and it's a sedate and comfortable performer on long motorway journeys - and the stance is firmly planted even when towing on winding country roads. There is a good-sized boot of 551 litres though opting for the full-size spare wheel reduces this to 400 litres. Depending on the trim, drivers can enjoy all-weather tyres, cruise control and automatic lights and wipers. Other models come with parking sensors, heated front seats, dual zone climate control, keyless entry and a heated steering wheel. Essentially, the Ssangyong Korando delivers a viable alternative in a competitive segment and while it may not have the precise handling and well-known badge of most of its rivals, the Korando does deliver space, equipment, safety and a solid and well-built SUV that drivers who want a vehicle of this type and size should take a closer look at.
