ENGINES AND PERFORMANCE FOR THE SKODA SUPERB

There's a good choice of engines for the Skoda Superb, there are four diesels and three petrol units. The choice would probably be the 2.0 litre petrol unit producing 280 bhp which offers excellent levels of performance. It's a responsive engine and the that is proving popular with British drivers. It will reach from 0 to 62 mph in less than nine seconds and on to a top speed of 135 mph; it will still, despite the level of performance, return 69 mpg. The most efficient choice is the 1.6 litre Greenline diesel unit which has aerodynamic improvements and better gear ratios to deliver economy of nearly 76 mpg with emissions of less than 100g/km.

EQUIPMENT AND HANDLING

The Skoda Superb is a comfortable place to spend time with lots of great design ideas, the dashboard would look perfectly at home in an upmarket model and the soft touch plastics are used well to give the Superb a modern look. For many, the Superb is either a spacious and well-made family hatchback or it's a small limousine; the space on board helps to create comfort. It helps that the boot measures 625 litres, that's bigger than most rivals.

The Superb underwent a revamp in 2017 that saw more safety equipment being added and some new design ideas, including on some models a 9.2 inch infotainment screen that has the firm’s Smart Link Plus system. There's also an advanced manoeuvre assist which detects obstacles in front of the Superb and will avoid it. Other additions saw a driver’s seat with a massage function and new 19inch alloy wheels. Some drivers will be reassured to know that the care connect system is fitted to some models and has an automatic emergency call function should this be necessary.

There's a lot of equipment, particularly on the entry-level model, such as 16 inch alloy wheels, a 5inch touchscreen and a DAB radio and all models have active cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

Out on the road, the Superb offers an excellent driving experience, the grip is particularly good and considering the segment it is in and it offers a great alternative to its better-known rivals. The comfort levels and handling make this a sound choice.

Essentially, for the money, the Skoda Superb is hard to beat with excellent levels of build quality, segment leading levels of legroom and it's a great car to handle.
