Overview of the Skoda Scala

Engines and performance for the Skoda Scala

The Skoda Scala comes with a choice of one diesel engine and three petrol units. The diesel is a 1.6 litre unit producing 113 bhp and should return 58 mpg. The petrol engines will meet most potential drivers' needs with the 1.0 litre unit producing 113 bhp returning 52 mpg. The 1.5 litre petrol engine delivers more power and when mated to the seven-speed automatic transmission will return 48 mpg.

Equipment and handling

The Skoda Scala offers a hatchback that is cheap to run, has plenty of space and lots of equipment. It is certainly well priced and it's a car that delivers a nice driving experience and comfort levels are high. There is extensive use of soft-touch materials to give the cabin a premium feel and entry-level models feature a 6.5-inch colour touchscreen, though other trims come with an 8-inch touchscreen and the range-topper has 9-inch offering featuring satnav and virtual cockpit digital dials. However, it's for the list of standard equipment that the Scala really scores strongly against its rivals with the entry-level model featuring electric windows, air conditioning, LED headlights and alloy wheels. Of the range, the SE deserves close attention since it offers an 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone connection, rear parking sensors and cruise control. Other models also include a rear-view camera, parking sensors, automatic climate control and rear privacy glass. There's also a digital instrument cluster available. Options include wireless phone charging as well as a panoramic sunroof and pet guards. The options list also includes adaptive cruise control, which is worth considering for commuters, and blind spot monitoring. Standard safety kit includes automatic emergency braking, pedestrian air bags and the firm's system to alert emergency services should the Scala be involved in a collision. The suspension delivers a comfortable ride and grip on winding country roads and it also deals with rough roads effectively. The Scala is nice to drive around town and a smooth cruiser on motorways - with plenty of space in the cabin so it's a comfortable place to spend time. Since growing numbers of families are opting for SUV's, there's still a lot to like about the Skoda Scala: it is well-designed and well-made with high comfort levels and for the money, the equipment list is quite impressive. The bottom line is that this is a cheap to run offering and designed with families in mind, so it's certainly worth shortlisting along with its potential SUV alternatives.
