The Seat Ateca is a stylish, spacious and comfortable car that's a great alternative for the SUV market. There's lots to recommend it and it’s definitely worth a closer look.
The entry-level model features a 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 113 bhp and also a 1.4 litre TSI engine producing 148 bhp. Both are very good and are sound choices for those who will mainly be driving around town though the 1.0 litre engine is no slouch when it comes to covering long distances on the motorway, despite the Ateca's size.
The range topper is a 2.0 litre diesel unit producing 148 bhp or 187 bhp and there is also a 1.6 litre TDI producing 113 bhp - which is likely to be the most popular choice since it will return 66 mpg with emissions of 112g/km though the more powerful 2.0 litre diesel engine will return 64 mpg. Even the smallest petrol engine will return 54 mpg with emissions of 121g/km with the 1.4 litre version returning 52 mpg.
There's no doubt the Seat Ateca will ruffle feathers not only with its pricing but also in its level of standard equipment in what is a very well made vehicle. The vast majority of Atecas will be two-wheel-drive only since many owners will not be going off-roading and the manual gearbox is a good performer. There's an automatic transmission available but only for the 2.0 litre diesel engine.
Out on the road, the Ateca is a comfortable car to drive and it handles well on winding country roads where the firm suspension delivers a stable ride. The light steering also helps deliver enjoyment levels, particularly when driving in towns. The boot size is a handy 510 litres which expands further when the rear seats are folded flat. There's plenty of room on board for passengers.
One of the big attractions for the Seat Ateca is the amount of standard equipment when compared with its rivals (though the entry-level model is rather sparse in comparison) and this includes air conditioning, USB connectivity, a 5-inch touchscreen and a leather steering wheel. Other models come with cruise control, dual zone climate control, rear parking sensors and folding door mirrors.
Despite not having a track record in building SUVs, the Seat Ateca is an excellent creation though it does share many parts with the VW Tiguan and it's been priced to sell. Definitely recommended in a competitive segment.
