The Renault Twingo is a spacious city car with quirky good looks that is nice to drive around town. It's an unusual offering in a competitive segment.
To help create space on board Twingo, the engine is found in the back of the car to power the rear wheels to help deliver a better than expected driving experience. There are two petrol engines to choose from, a 0.9 litre that produces 89bhp or a 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 69bhp. Both are coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox though there is a six-speed automatic transmission available as an option. The 1.0 litre unit should return 63 mpg with emissions of 105g/km; the smaller engine returns 67 mpg with emissions of 95g/km. The engines are surprisingly responsive to help make the Twingo a good car to drive around town, with a really good grip of the road and its sprightly performance really does help it stand out when on the open road.
The Twingo is one of the more distinctive looking and better performing cars in the keenly fought city car sector and buyers will enjoy lots of space and good performance. The first thing to notice is the Twingo has a tight turning circle which is a boost for town driving and it is only available as a three door model - not that it matters too much as there is still plenty of space on board, helped by the fact that the rear seats will slide backwards and forwards to create more boot space or legroom as needed. The boot itself has 165 litres of space which expands to 959 litres when the rear seats are folded flat.
A revamp in 2011 improved the layout and build of the cabin which now has a premium feel to it and it is a very comfortable car to drive. Like many carmakers, Renault allows the buyers of the Twingo to personalise their car with a range of optional extras to its standard list of equipment is quite impressive and includes DAB radio, electric windows and mirrors and an infotainment system. Other models come with air con among other features and the safety kit includes emergency braking assistance, hill start assist and electronic stability control.
Essentially, the Renault Twingo is a cheap to run city car that offers a decent amount of fun and agility in a well-priced package.
