The Renault Scenic is an MPV that offers value for money and is an all-round impressive offering. The interior is versatile and well-made and the diesel engines particularly offer excellent economy.
The engines were upgraded in the last revamp of the model and include impressive 1.5 and 1.6 litre dCi versions though the 1.2 litre TCe petrol engine also has better performance than one would expect. The engines are also very economical; the 1.5 litre dCi will return around 69 mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 105g/km of CO2. In comparison, the 1.2 litre petrol engine will return 45mpg and has CO2 emissions of 140g/km.
There's a good list of standard equipment, which now includes the TomTom satnav system and air con to help make the Scenic an appealing prospect. Other standard equipment includes keyless entry, LED lights, tables for passengers, dual zone climate control, cruise control and rear sunblinds. Other models also come with rear parking sensors and a panoramic sunroof.
There are also six airbags fitted as standard as well as anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control for what is a very well-priced package. It is also a very comfortable drive thanks to its soft suspension, which means that sometimes there will be some body roll on tight corners but it's also a very quiet car to drive thanks to its excellent insulation levels. As you would expect, the Scenic handles really well around town and it’s no slouch out on a motorway either with good performance and responsive engines. The boot is a very useful 437 litres in size and with a flexible seating system the space on board can be extended to an impressive 1,837 litres. That's practically the size of a small van.
When it comes to practicality, the Scenic is still one of the leaders; there's plenty of space to seat five people comfortably on seats that slide backwards and forwards easily and useful storage boxes are dotted around the cabin; the underseat drawers are also a useful idea.
The Scenic is the car that created a new segment of compact people carriers when it was first launched and it's still one of the best ones available. The mini-MPV still has some great design and some clever ideas in its interior to help make this an impressive car for families. The interior of this vehicle will take a lot of punishment thanks to its quality of materials and components used.
