Engines and performance for the Megane
There are just two engines for the Renault Megane - a 1.5 litre diesel unit returning around 63mpg and a very good 1.3 litre petrol TCe 140 unit returning 47 mpg. The petrol engine delivers a more agile performance around town, while the diesel engine producing 115 bhp is more suited for long motorway trips and is an impressive cruiser. The engines are mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic transmission.

The Renault Megane is a sound choice as a family car with good looks and it's also easy to drive and very comfortable on long journeys. The Megane also has a very impressive interior with a premium feel and a revamp in 2018 delivered more space and more equipment. There's no doubt that the family hatchback arena is a crowded and competitive segment, but the Megane does just enough to stand out. Opt for the higher spec versions and there's a large portrait-oriented touchscreen to enjoy, which is usually found in premium marques. Standard equipment includes cruise control, Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, alloy wheels and air conditioning. Other models come with rear parking sensors, satnav and automatic wipers and lights. The range topper is the GT Line which offers special alloy wheels, sport seats and upmarket upholstery. The Renault Megane is also a safe car and the options of autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control are well worth considering. Behind the wheel, the Megane offers a rewarding drive and is a smooth performer around town and in heavy traffic. It's also, particularly with the diesel engine, an excellent motorway cruiser offering stability and a quiet cabin. Essentially, the Renault Megane offers families and those wanting a stylish hatchback an impressive package that manages to blend economy, so it is cheap to run, with lots of technology and high comfort levels.
