Overview of the Porsche 718

Engines and performance for the Porsche 718

The Porsche 718 utilises a turbocharged four-cylinder engine rather than the carmaker's excellent flat-six unit but the powerful 2.0 litre creation still delivers the thrills. There's also a larger 2.5 litre engine for the S model, though neither engine delivers the distinctive Porsche soundtrack. The Porsche 718 Spyder has an excellent 4.0 litre engine producing 420 PS for a 0-62 mph sprint time of 4.4 seconds - an excellent time for a convertible. The upside is that the 718 is much cheaper to run with lower CO2 emissions and there's a very good seven-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters and a six-speed manual box for those who want to enjoy the real Porsche experience.

Equipment and handling

The Porsche 718 Cayman and also the Spyder, deliver true driving engagement with direct and responsive steering with excellent cornering. At no point does the 718 feel uncomfortable when being put through its paces – which makes it a sound choice for those who want to drive a sports car every day. The two-seater has a comfortable if somewhat snug cabin and there's a 150 litre boot under the bonnet and there is also space under the tailgate for another 125 litres. The 2.0 litre engine delivers 300 HP and will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 5.1 seconds, with the S model engine producing 350 HP and doing the same sprint in 4.6 seconds. The top speed for the 718 is 177 mph. Along with the excellent grip, the stance of the Porsche 718 delivers confidence and the excellent brakes - they are huge discs using four piston callipers - will stop the car when necessary. Among the standard equipment is satnav and there's a 7-inch touchscreen that has smartphone connectivity. The car also has bi-xenon headlights which automatically switch on at dusk and there is plenty of safety kit to deal with and avoid collisions. Drivers also get air conditioning, alloy wheels, heated mirrors with other models having leather seat trim and traction control. The options list is very expensive but the standard model should meet most driver's expectations. Essentially, the Porsche 718 is great performance car for enjoying track days and also a comfortable car for the daily commute.
